The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was established in 1957 as the world’s Atoms for Peace organisation within the United Nations system. Its dual mandate is to promote the peaceful use of nuclear technology while preventing its use for military purposes. It works with Member States and international partners to ensure nuclear technology contributes safely and securely to global peace, health and prosperity.
In October 1957, Vienna, Austria, was selected as the Agency’s headquarters. The Vienna International Centre became its permanent home in August 1979. The IAEA also operates regional offices in Toronto and Tokyo, liaison offices in New York and Geneva, and specialised nuclear technology laboratories in Austria and Monaco.
