Title: Conducting and Translating Nutrition Research in Humanitarian and Fragile settings in Africa: Challenges, Opportunities and Learning for Strengthening Evidence to Impact
Date: Monday, 30th November 2026
Venue: University of Namibia, Hage Geingob Campus, Windhoek

Summary
This is an interactive parallel session with a panel discussion and audience Q&A which aims to create a space for researchers and practitioners to share experiences, lessons learned and practical considerations for conducting nutrition research in humanitarian and fragile settings. Drawing on examples from countries affected by conflict, displacement and other humanitarian crises, the session will explore both the practical realities of conducting research and the implications for nutrition policy and programming. Particular emphasis will be placed on showcasing experiences from national institutions and practitioners, fostering dialogue on how research can be made more relevant, ethical and responsive.

Panellists: Representatives from ENN (Emergency Nutrition Network), APHRC (African Population and Health Research Center) and E4C (Evidence for Change), a conference researcher (TBC) and a policy maker (TBC)

Objectives

  • Explore the unique challenges and opportunities associated with conducting nutrition research in humanitarian and fragile settings, and how research can better respond to the needs of humanitarian programming,
  • Showcase experiences from African researchers and national institutions working in crisis-affected contexts,
  • Promote greater visibility of humanitarian nutrition issues within the African nutrition research agenda.
  • Promote equity in humanitarian nutrition research and programming by highlighting evidence gaps and research priorities relating to women and adolescent girls, pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and young children, and other populations at heightened risk of malnutrition and exclusion.
