Title: Protein Nutrition: advances in protein quality assessment methods and a new joint FAO-IAEA protein digestibility database
Date: Wednesday, 2nd December 2026
Venue: University of Namibia, Hage Geingob Campus, Windhoek
Summary
Protein remains a critical macronutrient that must be provided in the right quantity and quality for optimum human health. In the African context where most diets are plant-based, achieving optimum protein quality is a major challenge and is a key driver of malnutrition. Measuring protein quality is a critical necessity to enable the design of evidence-based dietary guidelines to meet protein and amino acid requirements. FAO and IAEA collaboration on this topic has resulted in a new joint database on ileal protein digestibility from human foods.
This symposium will be made up of 4 sessions each on different aspects of protein nutrition which will eventually lead up to the new joint FAO-IAEA database on protein digestibility and end with an open discussion.
Each session will be led by seasoned professionals who will give presentations on different topics:
- Protein nutrition and its relevance to Africa – Prof Daniel Tome
- Nuclear and stable isotope techniques in protein quality assessment – Prof Anura Kurpad
- How a stable isotope technique helped assessment of protein digestibility from Moroccan pulses – Prof Mohammed El-Mzibri
- New Joint FAO-IAEA Database on Protein Digestibility: a highlight of international collaboration in protein nutrition – Dr Maria Xipsiti
Moderator: Dr Victor Owino
Speakers: Prof Daniel Tome, Prof Anura Kurpad, Prof Gaudichon, Prof Mohammed El-Mzibri, Dr Maria Xipsiti
