CANA (Cancer and Nutrition for Africa) Symposium

Title: Nutrition and Cancer in Africa: From Evidence Gaps to African-Led Research and Action
Date: Tuesday, 1st December 2026, Lunchtime
Venue: University of Namibia, Hage Geingob Campus, Windhoek

Summary
Despite the growing incidence of cancer in Africa, the evidence needed to guide nutrition-related prevention and care is limited. Research linking diet, nutrition, physical activity and cancer is often done outside the continent even as African researchers continue to face constraints in access to research funding, mentorship, validated methods and multi-country platforms capable of generating comparable evidence at scale and African populations experience rapid changes in food environments, dietary patterns, obesity, undernutrition and cancer burden.

This symposium will address the two main challenges faced by African researchers investigating nutrition and cancer in the continent, namely: the scientific evidence gaps in cancer and nutrition, and the research capacity required to close them. It would also connect evidence generation with prevention, policy and nutrition care across the cancer continuum.

Speakers: Professor Ellen Kampman, Professor Reginald Adjetey Annan, Dr Keiron Audain, Professor Francis B. Zotor

Objectives

  • Identify priority evidence gaps at the intersection of diet, nutrition, physical activity and cancer in African populations.
  • Examine how African-led studies can generate context-specific evidence for cancer prevention and care.
  • Discuss the training, mentorship, grant-development skills and collaborative infrastructure needed to strengthen cancer and nutrition research capacity in Africa.
  • Define priority areas for future CANA research, training and multi-country collaboration
